Spring Has Sprung: Reorganize and Refresh for the Season Ahead

As the snow melts away and the first buds of spring begin to bloom, it’s the perfect time to rejuvenate your living space by cleaning and organizing. There’s something about the change in season that inspires all of us to shake off the dust and embrace a refresh. Whether you’re tackling cluttered closets, dusty corners, or simply looking to breathe new life into your home, here are some tips to help you embark on your spring cleaning journey.

  • Make a Plan

Take some time to assess your home and prioritize what needs the most attention. Break down chores into short, easy-to-accomplish tasks and be realistic about the timeline. Stock up on cleaning supplies and any organization tools, such as storage bins, ahead of time so you’re fully prepared to tackle your list.

  • Declutter

One of the most satisfying aspects of spring cleaning is decluttering. Get rid of items you no longer need or use by making three piles: keep, donate, and toss. Begin sorting the items you plan on keeping, making sure each one has a designated spot in the home. If you have trouble deciding if an item goes in the “keep” or “donate” pile, ask yourself if you’ve used it within the past year. If not, you should donate.

  • Safety First

Spring is the perfect time to change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and make sure units are free of dust. Ensure that fire extinguishers are working, and make sure your family knows the evacuation plan in case of emergency. These tasks are not always top of mind, so associating them with spring will help prioritize them on your calendar.

  • One Room at a Time

In order to not become overwhelmed, work from room to room and if possible, include the whole family. This will help break down tasks in the cleaning process and make them more manageable. Assign age-appropriate tasks to children, and start from the top down by dusting the ceiling fan to vacuuming the carpet or polishing the floors. Take your time, and remember it doesn’t all need to get accomplished in one day. Make cleaning a fun family activity by offering rewards for a job well done, and playing fun music to keep energy levels high.
